Over the last few Moon Mails, we’ve been taking a look at the Cardinal Grand Cross in an effort to better understand just what it might mean. Laying out the aspects a few weeks ago (and explaining just why the configuration can be so complex), we now have a partial review of what has transpired so far, under each of the principal alignments at work.
The newpapers tend to be a day behind in the news, so while the celestial aspect is listed for, say, March 13th, the copy will indicate a day later (NYT March 14th). All dates are for 2014.
Here was the short list:
Pluto opposing the Sun March 13th
Russian Troops Mass at Border With Ukraine
NYT March 14th
Since this was the earliest of the major timed aspects, we have already seen this one, and of how even Solar Fire‘s interpretation declared that it was like a battle zone. This alignment occurred on March 13th, 2014, and will be followed on May 18th (the retrograde pass) by another Pluto opposition to the US Sun. Stay tuned!

Ukraine Falters in Drive to Curb Unrest in East
By ANDREW HIGGINS
Ukraine’s failure to enforce its own ultimatums and its appeal to the United Nations to send peacekeepers laid bare a grim reality for the shaky government in Kiev.
NYT April 15th
This is the Pluto pivot, when it changed directions and started back down the line. Like a major aspect, the pivots stir up activity of a (in this case) Plutonian nature.
With Ukraine Tensions Mounting, U.S. Weighs New Sanctions Against Russia
By PETER BAKER
NYT April 14th
This is obviously an attempt to curb the colonial enterprise financially. The US is trying, like the pivot, to turn the tables around.

Russia Economy Worsens Even Before Sanctions Hit
By DAVID M. HERSZENHORN
With the country’s long-troubled economy teetering on the edge of recession, average Russians are feeling the pinch, even before the bite of Western sanctions over Crimea.
NYT April 17th
A word for a hard aspect to Uranus, “crazy”. The wheels of change are upon them, and for some, it is way too fast. Yes, Russia will feel reverberations down the line.

Pro-Russian Insurgents Balk at Terms of Pact in Ukraine
By ANDREW HIGGINS and ANDREW E. KRAMER
A U.S.-backed deal to settle the crisis in eastern Ukraine fell flat but appeared to arrest, at least temporarily, the momentum of separatist unrest in the region.
NYT April 19th
Jupiter in a hard aspect can indicate biting off more than one can chew, taking on too large a project, or working from a left-field disadvantage (where one is out of it).

In Cold War Echo, Obama Strategy Writes Off Putin
By PETER BAKER
President Obama is focused on isolating Russia by cutting off its economic and political ties to the outside world, limiting its expansionist ambitions and effectively making it a pariah state.
NYT April 20th
This is an attempt to isolate, but given time, let’s see how this one plays out. Cold War; Saturn Mars. Get it?

Photos Link Masked Men in East Ukraine to Russia
By ANDREW HIGGINS, MICHAEL R. GORDON and ANDREW E. KRAMER
Descriptions from eastern Ukraine endorsed by the Obama administration suggest many of the mysteriously well-armed gunmen there are Russian military and intelligence forces.

Under Russia, Life in Crimea Grows Chaotic
By NEIL MacFARQUHAR
A month after the lightning annexation of Crimea, residents find themselves in a state of confusion, with few institutions functioning normally, including banks, courts and foreign businesses.
NYT April 22nd
Here’s another good Uranian word, “Chaotic”. “Lightning” works as well.

These didn’t bubble to the front page headlines, but anyone who knows what was transpiring at this time, please fill us in.

The president, symbolized by the head hancho or king (Sun) ain’t doing so well.
TOKYO — President Obama encountered setbacks to two of his most cherished foreign-policy projects on Thursday, as he failed to achieve a trade deal that undergirds his strategic pivot to Asia and the Middle East peace process suffered a potentially irreparable breakdown.
Mr. Obama had hoped to use his visit here to announce an agreement under which Japan would open its markets in rice, beef, poultry and pork, a critical step toward the Trans-Pacific Partnership, the proposed regional trade pact. But Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was not able to overcome entrenched resistance from Japan’s farmers in time for the president’s visit.
In Jerusalem, Israel’s announcement that it was suspending stalemated peace negotiations with the Palestinians, after a reconciliation between the Palestine Liberation Organization and the militant group Hamas, posed yet another obstacle to restarting a troubled peace process in which Secretary of State John Kerry has been greatly invested.
The setbacks, though worlds apart in geography and history, speak to the common challenge Mr. Obama has had in translating his ideas and ambitions into enduring policies. He has watched outside forces unravel his best-laid plans, from resetting relations with Russia to managing the epochal political change in the Arab world. On Thursday, as Russia staged military exercises on the border with Ukraine, Mr. Kerry denounced broken promises from the Kremlin but took no specific action.

Mars square Sun: military action
And that’s the list so far. The others still lie in the future. None are as collected, in such a small concentration of time, as the aspects occurring in mid-April. Nevertheless, the 15th, 18th and 19th of May are another, smaller collection, but include the Pluto opposition to the Sun, one of the strongest of all the aspects described here.
There’s just one other alignment of note that we hadn’t brought up before, but will now. The US progressed Ascendant will inconjunct Pluto on November 10th, 2014. The pressure at that time will be on the financial markets and the decimation of the value of the dollar, among other things.
We will feel the squeeze.
